And now we bring you the ultimate guide to Carnival.
Carnival is a yearly event that goes on for two weeks, and concludes on Ash Wednesday to mark the beginning of Lent. Lent is the Christian tradition of fasting and abstaining from meats, foods, and other pleasures in the 40 days leading up to Easter. In Rio, the streets fill up with party-goers who dress in elaborate costumes, dance, play music, and have very few limitations on social taboos. The wealthy have their own celebrations with their extravagant balls and parties. No matter who you are, your background, or your social status, there is a celebration for you to take part in.
Rio’s top six samba schools converge in the Sambadrome to take part in the Champion’s parade. The parade is unlike anything you’ve ever seen, and is an all-night affair. The samba schools who participate have been a tradition for decades, and many of them originated in the 1940s and 1950s. Each school has their own theme. Starting with the sixth place samba school, each puts on an unforgettable spectacle as they make their way through the Sambadrome. The parade concludes with the champion samba school, who sets the bar high for the next year’s parades.
The neighborhoods and streets throughout Rio host their own parties and feasts, with over 300 of them happening each night. Samba groups are also part of these feasts, and many of the party-goers wear their own extravagant costumes. These events are open to the locals, as well as tourists. You can research the various parties to see which ones fit your mood for the evening (some will require tickets, so plan ahead!).
The masquerade balls are, to put it lightly, a sight to behold. They are exclusive events where the rich and famous gather to celebrate in the most luxurious ways possible. The tickets for some of these events can cost well over $1,000. If you decide you want to attend one of these events, you will need to plan well in advance to buy the ticket, plan your costume, and become familiar with the venue’s theme for the ball.
While it might be winter in other parts of the world, here in Rio, February is still in its summer season. You’ll experience hot, humid temperatures between 77-100°F, which is perfect for sunbathing and partying. You are sure to find plenty of opportunities for revelry on the beach, so it’s important that you wear nothing but the hottest, sexiest men’s swimwear. CA-RIO-CA Sunga Co. is the place to shop for men’s sungas, and we carry a massive variety of designs, cuts, and accessories to ensure you’re dressed to impress. Shop online at CA-RIO-CA now!
